235 disengaged workers: Court begins substantive hearing May 10

SUBSTANTIVE hearing in the case involving 235 disengaged workers versus Chevron Nigeria Limited and its contracting firms, JOCECO Nigeria Limited, Pat Onosen Nigeria Enterprises, Sanco Calaya JV Nigeria Limited and Hensteel Engr. & Construction Services Limited, has been adjourned till May 10, 2018.

This was sequel to a ruling of the trial judge, National Industrial Court sitting in Awka,  Anambra State, Justice J.I. Targema, after considering motions on whether or not the court has jurisdiction to hear the case.

According to Justice J. I. Targema, the court was of the view that written addresses filed by the defendants “did not address the issue of the nature of employment of the claimants, whether it is that of contract of service or contract for service.”

The court held that the nature of the employment of the claimants will only be resolved after hearing evidence from the parties.

Meanwhile, the motion of the second defendant (Pat Onosen, who was absent) asking for extension of time to file his statement of defence is still pending.
